Bloody Monday

SS14 - Bloody Monday  Lookbook  Presskit

Bloody Monday is a collection inspired by the Cleveland Elementary School spree shooting in San Diego in 1979. A teenager, Brenda Ann Spencer, killed two people and injured nine others at Cleveland Elementary School, which was located across the street from her home.

When the police asked her why she had done it, she just said “I don’t like Mondays, nobody likes Mondays”.

For Christmas in 1978, her father Wallace gave her a semi-automatic .22 caliber rifle. Before her parole board in 1999, she said: “I asked for a radio and he bought me a gun.” To the question as to why he might have done that, she answered: “I felt like he wanted me to kill myself.”

I learned this story by watching a documentary about the boredom in contemporary society. I guess this collection speaks about the need of existential entertainment, preciousness of childhood and the spirit of childhood, its fragility and the need to protect it. A theme that runs through all our work.

“Of three metamorphoses of the spirit I tell you: how the spirit becomes a camel; and the camel, a lion; and the lion, finally, a child. (…) The child is innocence and forgetting, a new beginning, a game, a self-propelled wheel, a first movement, a sacred Yes. For the game of creation, my brothers, a sacred Yes is needed: the spirit now wills his own will, and he who had been lost to the world now conquers his own world.”
